Established 2004

The Patchwork Dog and Basket is a quilt shop and haberdashery in the historic town of Lewes in East Sussex. We specialise in Patchwork and Quilting, selling absolutely everything you will need to make a quilt. We have a big selection of high quality medium weight 100% cotton fabrics designed specifically for Patchwork & Quilting, which are lovely to sew with, by hand or machine. Our suppliers include Moda Fabrics and Michael Miller, as well as several English designers from Makower Fabrics, Dashwood Studios & Liberty of London. We also stock both Hobbs & Sew Simple waddings, in various blends. Our selection of ribbons & trimmings ranges from basic double sided satins in a large variety of widths & colours (perfect for wedding invitations) to costume trimmings and a wide selection of cotton & linen tapes. In addition we have a vast range of buttons, general haberdashery from Hemline, John James & Clover, threads from Gutermann, DMC & Madeira, and specialist equipment for Patchwork & Quilting, such as cutting mats & rotary cutters & rulers from Olfa & Sew Easy, & scissors from Fiskars. We also stock books and patterns for ideas, instruction & inspiration. If you are in need of a little more guidance then we offer courses and workshops for all abilities, which take place in our spacious classroom upstairs.

Established in 2004, our family run business started life in Cuckfield, West Sussex. After 3 years we moved to Lewes, where we really felt at home in this wonderfully creative town. We have been suppling the many makers of Lewes for 7 years from two different shops in The Old Needlemakers. In 2015 we made one final (!) move to Mount Place, Lewes, where we launched our Online Marketplace for the first time, to compliment our little shop and Classroom. We have long been collectors of antique quilts sparking an interest in the history of patchwork & quilting that is reflected in a emphasis on historical reproduction fabrics in the shop. We stock ranges from French General – specialists in reproducing the antique textiles of France; Barbara Brackman, a Quilt Historian known for her extensive work on quilting & fabrics during the American Civil War, who now designs for Moda Fabrics, and also the Howard Marcus ranges, which are prints lifted directly from Civil War quilts themselves.

Our other specialist subject at The Patchwork Dog is fabrics designed in England, or Britain at least. We stock several ranges from Makower & Dashwood Studios – who both collaborate with the best design talent the UK has to offer, including Beth Studley from nearby Rochester in Kent. We also seek out home-grown influences from American based fabric house Moda including Janet Clare & Aneela Hoey. The colourful florals and classic prints from Liberty of London have always been a particular favourite and we are now delighted to be stocking a selection of Tana Lawns, as well as the Liberty Lifestyle ranges.

The Team

The shop and workshop are run by Mother and Daughter team, Jill and Josie Hillage, with a little help from our friends; Brigid works for us during the Winter and then work in the Costume Department at Glyndebourne Opera House for the rest of the year and Laura, who joined us in 2015, also has comes from a costume background, but is already hooked on patchwork! We are also joined by Carolyn, our quilty lady who resides in our attic studio with her Long-Arm Quilting machine – another service offer! Our shop is a bit tucked out of the way, just off the High Street, next to The Lewes Arms, but we are well worth finding – even if its just to say hello to our shop dogs Freddie & Myrtle, who are always pottering around. Our classes are taught by popular makers known both locally and nationally; Mandy Shaw, Annabel Groom, Carolyn Forster, Lara Sparks Janet Clare & Polly Kettley to name but a few.
