Artwave is the long established annual Visual Arts Festival hosted by artists and makers in and around lewes and the end of the summer. We are taking part with an Exhibition of Quilts for Lewes Artwave 2015 that we hope will inform and inspire our visitors. The whole event will focus on the Harriet Tubman quilt, designed by local designer and quilt maker Mandy Shaw. The quilt tells the story of a 18th century Afro-American woman who was born a slave, lived through the country’s brutal civil war and died an icon of freedom and courage.
The exhibition will not only celebrate the rich history between quilting and the American Civil War, but will also explore the idea of using traditional designs to tell stories through quilts. The event is listed in this years Artwave brochure, along will all other artist and makers who are taking part. Brochures can be collected from loads of venues in Lewes including our shop, and Tourist Information.
The quilts will be on display in our upstairs workshop during shop opening hours throughout Artwave from 22nd August – 5th September, and, as an extra special treat, Mandy Shaw will be here on the evening of Thursday 27th August to talk about her quilt and Harriet’s story in her own words. If you are interested in this evening event then please book in advance by visiting our shop or phoning 01273 483886.
