I always thought that the cold would be the reason we left The Needlemakers but in the end it was in the middle of last summer when we really started getting itchy feet. We’d been teasing everyone with the idea of an online shop for months, but with our little shop full to bursting we had neither the physical or mental space to even start thinking about this. So, after 7 years and two different units, we decided to spread our wings and look for a new shop.
This was obviously a huge decision, having just moved into a new unit in The Needlemakers only 2 years previously, so it was something we were going to have to spend quite a lot of time researching and thinking about, taking our time to find a really appropriate new venue for our shop, one that could house all the new ideas we had been planning for ages – so when, just a few days after we’d made up our minds to leave, Cathie Darcey from The Vintage Shirt Company on Mount Place, Lewes came in and said ‘I’m moving, do you want my shop? – It’s really light and cosy & its comes with a lovely big workshop space, an office and a kitchen’ we said, ‘Oh yes please Cathie, that sounds perfect’. and that was that.
There were no excuses now, we had to get the ball rolling with the online shop. There was no way it was something I could do by myself, and Jill is effectively Amish when it comes to technology so we felt it best to call in reinforcements, in the form of Piers from Lewes SEO and Charlie from Alala Design, both local to Lewes, to help us design and build our brand new website. Work started on the website a few months ago and gave us a welcome distraction from counting down the days we had left in the old shop and planning the big move, due to take place at the end of the year.
So here we are, after a chaotic few months we have moved hook line and sinker into a brand new shop and onto a brand new website. Now that we have dusted all the brick dust off our fabrics and rekindled our classroom furniture with an action-packed course list for 2015 we are all settled in and ready for action at 2 Mount Place. If you’re planning a visit then there are some handy directions on our website under contact us, we are perfectly positioned near The Lewes Arms, a wonderful pub referred to by one of our customers as ‘the sitting room of Lewes'; if you struggle to find us then just ask for directions to there – no self-respecting Lewisian won’t know where it is!
And if you’re reading this then you have already found our other new site! We hope you like what you see! Despite spending most of 2015 so far fiddling around with it, it is still very much a work in progress – there are loads of products still to come, loads and loads in fact, so keep an eye out for more stuff everyday. If you can’t see what you want or find anything confusing then please let us know and we will try to remedy it, or if you would like to know more about the shop, our classes and our events then sign up to our newsletter and we’ll keep you posted!
Another string to our bow for this year is to hit the road, taking our shop to lots of Quilt Shows around the country. We’ve already managed to squeeze one in, at Ardingly Showground in West Sussex – we will endeavour to show you some photos in our next blog, after the dust has settled on the website launch!
